NEW IN THE STUDIO [above: Onward 1, oil on canvas]
These new paintings are a reflection on layers, what is underneath, what is hidden and what Jenny allows to show through. Many are based on still lifes that are abstracted and start to become about the paint itself and the subjects become unimportant. The paint is freedom for Gray, it represents humanity, communication through the human touch. For more see Statement.
Jenny Gray is a painter who lives in Monroe, Oregon, a rural area about 40 mi. from Eugene. Gray’s work is influenced by a wide range of subjects; the northwest landscape, old barns, old signs, typography, the desert, printed ephemera and vintage textiles.

BEACH TOWERS SERIES
The Beach Towers Series of oil paintings by Jenny Gray start out depicting a specific subject, life guard towers in southern California where she was raised. As the painting progresses Jenny works to develop interesting compositions, colors, negative spaces, layers, and, contrasting linear elements. Relationships develop between elements, they take on personalities and interact with each other, they are characters in the story.
Jenny Gray is usually influenced by the space and shapes she finds in the rural Oregon landscape and small towns around Monroe, Oregon (40 mi. from Eugene). Originally from California in this series the southern California beach becomes her muse.

MONOTYPES
These monotypes clearly demonstrate the improvisational aspects of Jenny Gray's process, these pieces start with an angle, shape or relationship between elements. As with paintings, layers and additional elements are added and subtracted to the prints until the piece works from both a structural/design side and a human/emotional side.
